Minneapolis-based Mortenson Construction was ranked by Engineering News-Record (ENR) as the 17th Top Green Contractor in the U.S. This is the first time that ENR, a weekly magazine that reports news and intelligence on the global construction market, has measured the Green market by ranking contractors. The ranking was based on contractor revenue in 2006 from projects that were either registered or certified with a major third-party environmental standards or ratings group. In 2006, Mortenson reported revenues of $133 million in sustainable projects, representing 9% of their total revenue.
“Ranking 17th in the U.S. among construction managers/general contractors, and being the highest ranked general contractor in Wisconsin, is a testament to Mortenson’s commitment to sustainable building practices,” said Mark Sherry, Vice President of the Milwaukee office. “In addition to having significant sustainable construction projects, we promote green best-practices company-wide. It’s what we do.”
Mortenson’s Milwaukee Office served as a pilot program partner when the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) started their Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification program in 2004. A number of local projects have been LEED® Certified including, Johnson Controls Brengel Technology Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and JohnsonDiversey Global Headquarters in Sturtevant, Wisconsin. Nationally, Mortenson has 77 LEED® Accredited team members with 12 of those residing in Milwaukee.
Mortenson is a member of the USGBC, the Wisconsin Green Building Alliance, and WasteCap Wisconsin. Mortenson’s rates among the top contractors’ in promoting waste reduction and recycling on all projects. In 2006, Mortenson’s Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee Expansion project in Mequon, Wisconsin was honored with WasteCap Wisconsin’s Big Diverter Award, for the construction and demolition project with the highest debris recycling rate. Since the project partnered with WasteCap Wisconsin in January 2006, the project has recycled 2,158 tons or 79.64% of waste materials including metal, wood, concrete, asphalt, cardboard, and drywall.
