Hiett Hall-Lawrence University Residence Hall

This 183 bed residence Hall on the campus of Lawrence University in Appleton, WI was designed both to maximize the views of the Fox River and to minimize the storm water impact into it.  VOA architects of Chicago, IL incorporated bio-swales, native landscaping and maintained generous green space to assure minimum impact to this four acre site and the river that borders it.

 ENERGY AND ATMOSPHERE

 

  • Room occupancy sensors for lighting in public spaces
  • A commissioning of the building to ensure system efficiencies
  • Steam Heat from the central plant is pumped through an efficient in-floor radiant heat system

MATERIALS AND RESOURCES:

 

  • Construction site cardboard, metal and drywall were sorted and recycled
  • Concrete made with blast furnace slag was used
  • Ceiling tile with high recycled content

 INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY:

 

  • Exhaust air heat recovery system
  • Digital building HVAC automation systems were installed.  Variable frequency drives on fans and pumps were installed for efficiency
  • High performance tinted glass
  • Efficient in-floor radiant heating system   

High performance tinted glass reduces the heat gain from this southern exposure..
